All you need to know about the Vino Classic is that it wraps retro Italian styling around Japanese technology, all for an affordable price. Always chintzy with fuel, the little Vino four-stroke engine just goes and goes on its barely-more-than-a-gallon of gas; Yamaha claims 115 mpg! Hey, use the savings to update your DVD library and see for yourself where the styling came from!

Yamaha’s big enduro bike has long been an off-road contender. Its YZ-bred aluminum frame carries a five-titanium-valve Single-cylinder engine with class-competitive power and excellent tractability. Fully adjustable suspension front and rear is set up for the full rigors of the trail. Convenience features include electric start and a digital enduro computer that includes “pace-management” features so you can make your enduro checkpoints right on time. The WR450F is also green-sticker approved for California.

There’s a lot of the YZ250F motocrosser in the WR250F, which runs camshaft profiles and valve timing intended to provide strong, hard-hitting low-end and midrange power that enduro and hare-scrambles riders really appreciate. They also like the close-ratio transmission that has small steps between third, fourth and fifth gears, the better to keep the high-revving, five-valve engine on the boil. The 250 has a YZ-bred aluminum frame with a hefty skidplate. Like the 450F, the 250 has both electric and kick starters.

Lei’s call this a serious off-road playbike. It’s got an electric starter so newbies can simply hit the button and go, but it’s also been given considerable suspension travel and a foot of ground clearance, meaning experts can have fun, too. A YZ-type, six-speed gearbox and a heavy-duty clutch get the dohc, four-valve Single’s power to the ground. The Team Yamaha blue/white bodywork includes a 2.5-gallon gas tank so extended rides are part of the TT-R’s mission statement. The generously padded scat doesn’t hurt long-range capabilities, either. Winning enduros isn’t in the TT-R’s bag of tricks, but just about everything else is.

Yamaha TT-R125LE / TT-R125E$2999/2699
Engine type: four-stroke Single

“Fun” is a playbike’s recipe for success, and in the case of the TT-R125LE. Yamaha felt that fun could use a dose of seriousness. So the suspension is stiffer than your average playbike’s, with a fully adjustable rear shock working on an aluminum swingarm. Big-for-little-bike 19/16-inch wheels roll over obstacles more easily than smaller hoops. Electric starting gets it going and a front disc brake gets it to stop. Also available: The TT-R125E is essentially the same machine, but a 17-/14-inch wheel combo and shorter rear suspension travel lower the seal height, and a drum front brake instead of a disc-helps reduce the E’s list price.

This is your basic pumped-up muscle-mini to help the youngsters make good progress with their dirtbike riding skills. The 110’s styling is inspired by the bikes of the YZ line, while the “E” in the name stands for electric starting, sure to bring your wee rider a big smile. The four-speed transmission works with an automatic clutch so kids can learn to shift without the added difficulty of clutching, too. A low, 26.4-inch seat is allied with 7.1 inches of ground clearance, so your little ones can ride just about anywhere their hearts desire.

Youngsters these days don’t know how good they’ve got it. Take minibikes, for instance. Back in the day, when engines came from lawnmowers and frames were made of glorified water pipe, who knew you needed working suspension at both ends? Brakes? That’s what shoe leather was for. Three whole transmission gears? Unheard of, as was a reliable, non-slipping auto-clutch. And an electric starter?! Those were for cars. What’s wrong with a good old-fashioned pull-rope? The TT-50E has all those yearned-for features and more. What’s that they say about youth being wasted on the young?

Yamaha PW50$1199

Toys for tots? Right here! The PW50 makes learning to ride a motorcycle about as easy as possible. It’s got a fully automatic transmission, no shifting required, just twist-n-go. Final drive is by shaft, so no chain adjustment or messy lubing is necessary. Seat height is less than 20 inches, so even if they’re short for their age, kids fit and their boots will touch the ground at stops, a great confidence-booster for first-timers. It’s even got a centerstand so at night, your guy or gal can go out in the garage and sit on the PW, feet up, and make vroom-vroom sounds.

To go unchanged in the motocross world is to invite defeat. The YZ450F therefore gets lots of improvements every year to keep its competitive edge. This year, the frame, swingarm and suspension have been modified to improve cornering, while power comes from the same, stout five-valve Single. Trick features? A ProTaper aluminum handlebar rides in adjustable clamps; Excel rims are standard; the shock spring and exhaust header are titanium; and the seat is made in the “gripper” style. The pictured White/Red color scheme adds $100 over the Team Yamaha Blue/White.

Two-strokes? Ready to join the dinosaurs and the dodo bird, right? Not quite yet! Yamaha keeps rolling out the YZ250 for premix fans. It was subject to a pretty substantial revision in 2008 that included a fork with different-thickness tubes and revised damping rates for lighter weight and better bump absorption. The shock, too, was recalibrated to match the fork s new settings. The handlebar is an aluminum ProTaper in adjustable mounts similar to those utilized on the four-strokes. Still can’t beat the power-to-weight ratio of a good old two-stroke!

Yamaha YZ250F$6549/6649

The 250cc four-stroke motocrosser probably rates as the best all-around moto machine for experts and novices alike. There is plenty of torque to motor out of corners but they also are much easier to manage than the sometimes explosive snap from the big 450s. And there may not be anything so satisfying in internal combustion as revving out a quarter-liter four-stroke. The YZ250F’s engine gets a few changes this year-exhaust system and new carb/ignition settings to improve its performance, and the clutch has been redesigned. Chassis changes include a new swingarm for better cornering. As with the 450F, the White/Red bodywork costs $100 extra.

Yamaha YZ125$5799
Engine type: two-stroke Single

Front wheel travel: 11.8 in.

Two-strokes may have fallen from favor in Lites-class professional racing thanks to the onslaught of 250cc Thumpers, but there’s still a lot to like about 125cc pre-mixers. Take purchase price: The YZ 125 is $750 less expensive than the YZ250F. How about weight? Quadra-strokes have made huge strides, but the 125 is 18 pounds lighter than the F-model. At the end of a long, tough moto, that s a difference that adds up, especially for those of us not on a pro-class training regimen.

The littlest member of the YZ motocross family is every bit as serious a race tool as its bigger brothers. Fitting, as the 85cc class is an important stepping-stone between Pee Wee racing and full-size bikes. Virtually every frontline star racing today proved himself first on 85s. The YZ has all the right tools for the job-fully adjustable, long-travel Kayaba inverted fork and link-type shock; a slick-shifting, close-ratio transmission and heavy-duty clutch; strong disc brakes front and rear; and removable rear subframe for easier maintenance.
