“It looks like a wasp.” someone said six decades and 16 million scooters ago, and thus the Vespa (Italian for “wasp”) was born. That distinctive shape is still with us today in the top-of-the-line Granturismo Sport. Nothing retro about its liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine, though, which pushes the GTS to almost 80 mph. A luggage rack comes standard, and the well-padded dual seat opens to reveal a spacious storage bin. Also available: For real Vespaholics, a limited-edition GTV model is available for an added $900, celebrating early Vespas with a low, fender-mounted headlight and special Portofino Green or Siena Ivory paint.

Introduced in 2006, the LX (the Roman numeral for 60) marked Vespa’s 60th year in business. During that time, the little Italian “Wasp” has taken its place next to the Ford “Tin Lizzie” and Volkswagen “Beetle” as one of the world’s favorite modes of transportation. The LX 150 cuts through snarled traffic and looks stylishly good while doing so. It’ll nudge 60 mph and should deliver 72 mpg when ridden with a little discretion. For 2009, the LX models-like all the Vespas - get fuel-injection. A vintage-look LXV version of the 150 can be had for $800 more. Also available: The LX 50, fundamentally the same scooter but with a 49cc engine.

Vespa S150 / S50$4199/3199

Say “Vespa,” and most folks think of Roman Holiday and Gregory Peck, but these new models trade on mod designs from the ’60s and ’70s. Funky rectangular mirrors and headlamps recall Warhol and Fellini, and the solo racing-style seat (a two-up saddle is optional) stirs up Moto Giro rally fantasies. Mechanically, the 150 is similar to the LX and LXV models. Also available: The S 50, basically the same scoot but with an all-new fuel-injected engine that Vespa says is the most powerful 50cc four-stroke scooter motor on the market.
