You want lop of the line? This is it, at least as far as United Motors is concerned. The limited-edition V2C-650T is the touring version of UM’s middleweight cruiser series. As such, this liquid-cooled V-Twin is equipped with a selection of traditional over-the-road necessities, including a copbike-style windshield, a passenger backrest, a rear rack, floorboards, engine guards and saddlebags. Also available: The V2C-650S, the same bike but without the bags, windshield, backrest, rack, engine guards and floorboards.

If clipping apexes is one of your favorite pastimes, the fully faired, clip-on-equipped, perimeter-framed V2S-650R is worth a closer look. UM is a distributor for Korean bike-maker Hyosung, but due to some confusion in the agreement, UM continues to sell the same 650 and 250cc models, both sportbikes and cruisers, as its supplier, albeit in different colors and with the UM logo on the gas tank. The V2S-650R, then, mirrors in specification the equally sharp-handling Hyosung GT650R. Updates for 2009 include revised instruments and blacked-out frame, wheels and suspension components.

Is this another case of mistaken identity? Well, that’s one way to look at it. As with its 650s, United Motors’ liquid-cooled, eight-valve 250cc V-Twins are absolutely identical to those of the bikes’ Korean manufacturer, Hyosung. Key features include a full fairing with projector-beam headlights, single-shock rear suspension and adjustable footpegs. Updates for this year include a multi-function LCD display featuring speedometer, odometer, tripmeter, neutral light, fuel level, high beam and turnsignal indicators, along with blacked-out frame, wheels and suspension components. Also available: The V2S-250, a naked version of the 250R that carries a $500-lower suggested retail price.

This rebadged Hyosung GV250 is a nifty and affordable little entry-level V-Twin cruiser. With its low seat, comparatively light weight, low-end-torque-oriented gearing, stability-enhancing 17-inch wheels (dig that 150mm-wide rear tire!) and budget buy-in, it’s an ideal choice for new or less-experienced riders. Among its features are a digital LCD instrument panel that includes speedometer, odometer, tripmeter, neutral light, fuel level, high beam and turnsignal indicators. Color selections are black, burgundy, orange or silver.

Think of the 2009 X-Peed 250i as the grown-up version of the now-discontinued X-Peed 50R. Known to Hyosung buyers as the MS3-250, the 250i slots nicely into the fast-growing middleweight scooter category, which is to say that it’s powerful enough to stay ahead of four-wheel traffic but frugal when it comes to fuel usage. Features include seating for two and room for a full-face helmet and a jacket in the locking storage compartment under the seat. New for 2009 is a redesigned seat with adjustable rider backrest designed to provide more legroom for taller riders.

Pump up the volume? That’s the idea behind the Matrix II 170, a larger-displacement take on the Matrix II 150. Keyed underseat storage holds a full-face helmet, and the sporty rear rack is perfect for hauling a light load of gear or groceries. Front and rear disc brakes with wave rotors provide strong, predictable stopping power, an important feature when you’re negotiating the urban jungle. Also available: Commuting is fun on the Matrix II150, a slightly less-powerful and lower-priced version of the Matrix II 170.

If the Matrix is too big and too pricey for your scootering needs or for your wallet have no fear. New for 2009, the GP1R-150 has a smaller frame and wheels to make it friendlier to smaller riders, but it keeps the sporty styling and useful features-like projector-beam headlamps, locking underseat storage and electric start from the larger model. The price tag is incredibly low for a 150cc scooter; so combine that with a claimed fuel economy of 95 mpg and this is as cheap as dependable personal transportation gets.
