A selection of hop-up equipment is available for the XP4R, including Marzocchi forks. Ohlins shocks, four-valve cylinder heads and a whole lot more.

The most serious motocross model from the Italian Polini firm is the XP65R, a for-real, all-out competition machine. Its six-speed, liquid-cooled, reed-valve two-stroke motor is tuned for quick laps under a fast rider, and the long-travel Marzocchi inverted fork and Ohlins piggyback-reservoir shock work with the 14/12-inch wheel combination to handle whatever the roughest tracks can put under it. The 65R has earned podium finishes at races all across the country ever since its introduction three years ago.

The top 50cc motocrosser in the Polini lineup is the X3R, a liquid-cooled, reed-valve-intake two-stroke that’s AMA-approved for mimi-MX racing. This little hot-rod has all the requisite equipment 12-inch front/10-inch rear alloy wheels for competition in the more advanced mini classes, hydraulic disc brakes, a rugged double-cradle steel frame with a detachable rear subframe, a beefy aluminum swingarm and a reservoir shock. All that’s missing is one fast little rider.

One step below the X3R model is the X1R, a very similar bike that makes just a wee bit less horsepower and uses the 10-inch front and rear wheels that arc necessary for competing in certain mini-MX classes. Despite its smaller wheels and $300 lower price tag, however, the X1R is still a very capable mini MX machine.
