Korean manufacturer Kymco has been selling scooters in the U.S. for a short while, but the Venox 250 is its first effort here with a motorcycle. The Venox is not likely to win any 250-class performance awards, but for most people’s basic transportation needs, bikes in the 250-300cc range get the job done very L efficiently. The Venoxs styling is aggressive, A the seat is low and the eight-valve, liquid-cooled V-Twin engine puts out enough power to keep you ahead of urban traffic without any problems.

Kymco is well-known for building small-displacement scooters and motorcycles, so a full-sized touring scooter from the Korean company really is “Xciting.” For 2009, this big, comfy scooter gets a sporty windscreen and fuel-injection, and is also available in an ABS model. The Xciting offers stable handling, fast acceleration and good longdistance comfort, and it also has an illuminated storage compartment under the scat, complete with a cell-phone charging port. A rear luggage rack is standard, and a 12-volt accessory outlet under the seat allows you to charge your favorite electronic gadgets. Also available: People S models in three oilier displacement sizes with nearly identical styling, and all retain the stability of 16-inch wheels.

If you’re in the market for a reasonably large scooter that’s fuel-efficient and not too hard on the pocket-book, the Grandvista could halt your search. It has the weather protection and storage capacity of bigger maxi-scooters combined with a smaller, 250cc motor and 12-inch wheels that make for a more-nimble package. Standard features include a luggage rack, passenger and rider backrests, preload-adjustable dual rear shocks and a large windscreen. The well-outfitted instrument panel includes a fuel gauge, plus there’s a 12-volt accessory outlet and electrically operated, folding rearview mirrors.

Unlike its S-type counterpart, the standard People 150 has a bit more of a European flavor to its styling, especially the little Vespa-like “fairing” around the handlebar-mounted headlight. It comes without a windshield but does have a liquid-cooled four-stroke motor that provides decent around-town zip. And like all People scooters, it uses 16-inch wheels for excellent stability. Also available: The People 50 keeps the 150’s styling but uses an air-cooled two-stroke engine for propulsion. An optional buddy seat allows for two-up riding. Kymco has sweetened the pot with a significant price break for 2009.

Popular among scooter racers and like-minded enthusiasts for its aggressive styling and responsive air-cooled single-cylinder engine, the Super 8 150 (formerly the Super 8 125) is arguably Kymco’s sportiest scooter. Also available: The Super 8 50, sized and styled identically to the Super 8 150, but now powered by a clean-burning four-stroke engine instead of the previous model’s two-stroke.

One look al the racy graphics and take-no-prisoners styling of the lightweight Super 9 AC 2T (for air-cooled two-stroke) tells you that this is the pinnacle of Kymco’s stroker model line. Electric starting (with prod-and-go kicker backup) allows for quick getaways, while the disc front/drum rear brakes provide smooth, consistent stops. Clean freaks take note: Oil-injection takes the hassle and mess out of mixing gas and oil. In terms of options, if you don’t care for the subdued matte-gray-and-gold paint scheme, there’s always the shockingly bright blue/yellow alternative.
