Rules for AMA motocross racing allow 125cc two-strokes that have been overbored to 144cc to compete in the Lites class. This means Lites two-strokes once again have a fighting chance. KTM is producing just such a 144cc model, called the 150 SX, and if you love small-displacement two-strokes, you won’t want to get off this one. Its power-to-weight ratio is superior to that of any four- or two-stroke of its size, and no bike whips through the corners faster and accelerates harder. Also available: The 125 SX, the standard bike in the Lites class.

Too big for a mini and can’t touch the ground on an 85 but you still want to race? If so, the 65 SX could be the answer. It’s the smallest bike in the KTM line that has a six-speed transmission and a hydraulic clutch. It also boasts a power-to-weight ratio much like those of the bigger KTMs, in addition to a Marzocchi inverted fork and WP shock. Despite those big-bike features, the scat height is just 29.5 inches, ideal for riders with short inseams. Also available: The 65 XC, the smallest of KTMs cross-country models with features to make it more off-road worthy.

The 50 SX is a fully competitive racebikc designed for the mini expert who’s ready to take his or her riding to the next level. That explains the bike’s long suspension travel and its front and rear disc brakes. What’s more, the 50 SX’s liquid-cooled two-stroke engine has the most aggressive power output of all KTM minis, but it is delivered through an automatic transmission so little riders won’t be confused by clutch and gearbox operation. Also available: The 50 SX Junior, the same bike but with smaller (10-inch) wheels and a milder state of engine tune better suited to younger or less-experienced riders.

Here’s a great starter racebike for youngsters ranging in age from six to nine. The 50 SX Mini offers a full complement of competition-capable features, including high-quality suspension, a rugged chassis and a powerful yet easy-to-control engine, thanks in part to its centrifugal clutch and marginally lower state of tune than those on KTM’s other 50cc models. The Mini’s low seat is adjustable over a one-inch range of height, helping to make the bike that much more easily manageable for really small kids but still adaptable for somewhat larger ones.
