“How cute!” is what your girlfriend (or boyfriend?) will probably say when faced with Hondas little Metro. And that was the intent from the beginning with this retro-styled econo-scooter. It has the same basic underpinnings as the Ruckus and is another ultra-easy ride that is pretty inexpensive. The lower of the two prices listed here is for plain Ocean or Ghost colors, with the more elaborate Monza and Graphite paint schemes (now with chromed mirrors, 3-D emblems and muffler cover, black wheels and a two-tone seat!) tipping the ante by $100.

If you’re looking for an excellent, all-around off-roader, the electric-start CRF450X is one of the best. Power from the titanium-intake-valve-equipped engine is broad and snappy. The chassis is fitted with a compact, lightweight Honda Progressive Steering Damper (HPSD) that is similar in appearance to the one used on the award-winning CRF450R motocrosser but tuned for off-road riding. A narrower gas tank and seat improve ergonomics, and a revised front tire with a new profile eases turning while providing better traction.

Once again, the CRF250X is one of the lightest-handling and most-agile off-road bikes you can buy. As such, it is pure magic on the trail. Like its 450cc bigger brother, the 250 underwent many changes for the ‘08 model year, including new works-type front and rear disc brakes, a narrower gas tank and an easier-turning front tire. It’s mostly unchanged this year, remaining the same lightweight, capable package with a twin-spar aluminum frame, a head- and taillight, a Renthal bar and an off-road-oriented 18-inch rear wheel.

The CRFs that arc bigger than the 230 really are production racebikes, just about ready to hit the local enduro circuit and be competitive right out of the crate. But from the 230 on down, its all about off-road playing. So, this midsize fun bike gets a dead-reliable air-cooled engine, simple, conventional suspension and a lower seat height than on those more competition-oriented models. The styling is racy-looking, though, so you look the part when out busting berms. How much fun is the CRF230F? Several years ago, it came out on top of a CW playbike comparison. Yes, it’s that good.

Honda CRF150F$3199

The playbike market is huge, and so Honda, like most other manufacturers, wants every piece of that pie it can get its hands on. Plus, kids and adults come in all sizes and with all skill levels, so it makes sense to build smaller off-roaders in practically every reasonable displacement and seat-height increment. The CRF150F is a fun mount for both kids and adults, because it very well splits the size difference between big and little people. Electric starting greatly broadens the appeal, plus the 150 is also CARB-legal, making it public-trail-friendly out West.

This is the classic minibike. Backyard supercross began with modified versions of these bulletproof four-strokes, while professional dirt-track racers have known for years the virtues of training on short ovals while riding what used to be known as the XR100. This is the same great bike it always has been, and it’s not just for backyard racers or pros who need to train. It is fun, easy to start and about as reliable as a little motorcycle can be. Who knows, start the kids now and they may make it big one day. Yeah, yeah, don’t worry, Dad; you can have fun on the CRF100F, too.

Okay, your child’s mental acuity is far surpassing his physical growth. He is absolutely riding the wheels off his auto-clutch mini, and his left hand is just too bored! Well, here you go. Dad and Mom. the ideal stepping-stone to the larger world of dirtbiking, and with a manual clutch. The low seat height means the CRF80F is easy to handle for little people, but this is a legit, fully operational dirt machine. It’s a kick-start bike, but that isn’t a bad thing because it’s almost impossible not to be able to fire up one of these little machines.

The 70 is the biggest true minibike in Honda’s broad line of CRF models. That is to say, it’s got comparatively small wheels, with its 14/12-inch front/rear setup, and a very low seat. And while the air-cooled. 72cc engine is pretty snappy and the three-speed transmission features foot-operated shifting, the clutch is fully automatic. That’s a genuine bonus. because simultaneously learning to control the throttle, the brakes and the steering quite often is enough for kids to deal with when they’re just getting their legs in the off-road arena.

Welcome to mini madness with the CRF50F, a great starter bike for the youngest of riders. It is tiny, light, dead-reliable and very easy to start. There is also a keyed ignition switch so the youngsters can’t go on any unapproved sorties into the woods. But forget the kids: Adults racing 50s with all manner of super-exotic hop-up kits - from alloy frames to big-bore cylinders to dohc cylinder heads-are having more fun than the little ones. There is a reason this is Honda’s best-selling off-road bike: fun for everyone!

The CRF450R was last years Cycle World Ten Best winner, but that didn’t stop Honda from completely redesigning its popular four-stroke moto-crosser. The list of improvements include a brand-new, higher-revving, short-stroke engine equipped with electronic fuel-injection. A new twin-spar aluminum frame and a longer swingarm help improve rear-wheel traction for better acceleration and front-tire traction for steering in the rough stuff. Bonus: The airbox was redesigned to case access to the washable, two-stage air filter.

Like its big-bore brother, the 2009 CRF250R gets a host of improvements, including a new combustion chamber and a longer exhaust header that work together to enhance lower-to-mid-rpm power output. New four-dog transmission gears, and a revised shift drum and arm, make for more positive shitting. Reshaped works-type 240mm brake rotors are lighter, and the plastic rear disc guard is smaller, lighter and vented. Oh, and the new handgrips are 3mm longer. That’s what we call atten¬tion to detail bordering on obsessive!

Up until recently, serious mini-motocross racebikes all have been two-strokes. But Honda has led the little-Thumper revolution with the CRF150R, a full-spec, knob-shredding, four-stroke racer. As with the bigger CRF-Rs, the 150R has a four-valve Unicam head sitting atop an alloy cylinder. A 32mm Keihin FCR carburetor is standard, as is a slipper piston and plenty of other big-bike features. Suspension is fully adjustable front and rear, too. Also available: The CRF150R Expert, the same bike but with 19/17-inch wheels rather than the standard model’s 17/14 combination.
