Minimalist styling cues from the post-World War II “‘bobber” movement and the custom choppers of the 1970s were the inspiration for the Dyna Street Bob. It’s a bike that’s all about going solo, since it has neither a seat nor pegs for a passenger. The rider sits way down in a 26.8-inch-high seat and hangs onto a mini-apehanger handlebar. Regardless of the color of the Street Bob’s tank and fenders. a wrinkle-black finish is applied to the battery box, console and belt guard. The Twin Cam 96 engine exhales through chromed staggered shorty dual exhausts for just the right look.

“Clean Machine” would be a good description of the Dyna Super Glide. Nothing radical going on here, just a nice combination of straightforward and traditional H-D lines set off with the right amount of chrome in all the right places. A pullback handlebar hovers above a Fat Bob fuel tank with FXDWG-style tank-mounted speedometer and ignition console. Like all production-line Big Twins, the Super Glide is powered by a Twin Cam 96 engine linked to a six-speed Cruise Drive transmission. A Smart Security System is just one of many available options.

Despite being the most affordable H-D Big Twin model, the Dyna Super Glide doesn’t shortchange its rider in the least. It packs the same 96-inch, fuel-injected power and six-speed gearbox as the rest of the Big Twins, and the chassis is pretty much the same as on the other Dynas. This bike’s low buy-in makes it the perfect first step on the road to creative personalization. Key features include a 160mm-wide rear tire, a solo seat, silver 10-spoke cast-aluminum wheels, low-rise handlebar and staggered shorty dual exhausts.

Americans rejoice! After first being introduced mid-2008 to a Europe-only market, the XR1200 - a bike whose decades-long flat-track-racing heritage is pure, unadulterated stars and stripes-is now available here in limited quantities. With its XR-750-esque styling, almost 30 percent higher horsepower than a standard 1200 Sportster and superb backroad handling provided by excellent suspension and sticky tires, it’s not just the best Sportster ever, it may be the best Harley ever. In addition to being fast and fun, it’s a pleasant all-around road companion, with spacious ergonomics, a comfy scat and a taut but controlled ride. Available in H-D orange, black or Pewter Denim.

The coolest big-inch Sportster? Gotta be the Custom. Its loaded with fancy, attention-grabbing features that are sure to set it apart from other made-in-Milwaukee models of like engine displacement. It comes in eight different color options, and H-D’s accessory catalog offers a practically endless array of accessories to choose from, making it easy for you never to come across another Sportster that looks exactly the same as yours. The rubber-mounted XL Evolution engine with staggered shorty dual exhausts provides plenty of V-Twin thrum. Wheels arc cast aluminum out back and 21-inch wire-spoked steel up front.

So, you would love to have a full-size Sportster but you need something a little bit lower so you can get both feet comfortably on the ground at stops? If that’s the case, the aptly named 1200 Low is custom-tailored just for you. With its cut-down, 26-inch-high scat and shortened rear suspension, the Low should provide even the most inseam-challenged riders firm footing. The pullback handlebar is an inch closer to the rider than on the other Sporty models, as well. Mate all that with a reduced-effort clutch, and you get a Sportster that is comfortable and controllable for a wide range of riders, regardless of their height or leg length.

Somewhere between its debut in 1957 and the present, the Sportster lost its edge. At one time the most hairy-chested of two-wheelers, it’s since been reduced in many people’s minds to a beginner’s bike. Well, the rough-and-ready Nightster is doing its part to destroy that image. Among the key styling features: a side-mounted license plate that folds rearward, flush with the blacked-out fender rails: wheel rims, hubs, fork, handlebar and hand/foot controls finished in basic black: medium-gray powdercoated engine cases with polished valve covers; and a cut-down solo seat that props the rider just a tad more than 26 inches off the ground.

Here’s a lower-priced smaller-displacement version of the 1200 Custom that offers the same basic features but for about $2000 less. It gets the same 21-inch front wheel, cut-down rear suspension and 30.1-degree steering angle as the bigger-displacement model, but without quite so much chrome, especially on the engine covers. Also available: The Sportster 883 Low, which is fundamentally the same machine hut with a 19-inch cast front wheel, a smaller gas tank, a solo seat and. most important, shorter suspension that provides a 1-inch lower seat height.

A variation on the original VRSC, this model is the closest interpretation of that ground-breaking bike. Now packing an ultra-fat 240mm rear tire but retaining its 36-degree steering-head angle, forward foot controls, pullback handlebar, drag-style cast aluminum rear wheel and chrome slash-cut exhaust, it’s spicier than ever. The liquid-cooled Revolution engine pumps out 121 hp and 84 ft.-lb. of torque and is fitted with a slipper clutch, legitimizing its place in the “power-cruiser” segment of the market. Plus, the V-Rod’s 2009 prices are $1500 to $1800 lower than those of the 2008 models.

Black is back, and the Night Rod Special is here to prove it. This is, for the most part, a standard V-Rod that looks like its been dunked in a giant vat of black paint. Just about everything-engine, frame, bodywork, fork sliders, triple-clamps, swingarm and small “speed screen”-is black. The slotted cast aluminum wheels have a thin orange pinstripe as an accent, and the otherwise-black exhaust system has brushed-aluminum covers on the mufflers. With the 1250cc engine pounding out a claimed 125 horsepower and 85 ft.-lb. of torque, the Night Rod Special is special indeed.

The newest member of the V-Rod family fits its name perfectly. Thanks to its wide stance and new angular bodywork, you won’t confuse it with any other Harley on the road. A fat, 240mm rear tire sits under a clipped rear fender that has LED stop/turn/ taillights tucked under the trailing edge. A side-mounted license plate leaves the fender clutter-free. An inverted fork is mounted at a 34-degree rake, providing much of the stretched look. Five-spoke cast aluminum wheels measure 19 inches up front and 18 out back. A deeply stepped seat, forward foot controls and a handlebar with internal wiring plant the rider in a laid-back position. Options include ABS and a Smart Security System.

The Tri (Hide marks Harley s second foray into the three-wheel segment (from 1932 to 1973, the company made the Servi-Car) and the first product emerging from H-D’s 2006 agreement with Lehman Trikes. Basically, it is an Ultra Classic Electra Glide with a modified rear section incorporating dual rear wheels and a large luggage trunk. Power is from a 103-inch engine instead of a 96-incher, and different front-end geometry allows better non-leaning steering behavior. The Tri Glide carries a two-year limited warranty and is sold and serviced by the H-D dealer network. An electric-motor-powered Reverse is optional.
