This is the top-of-the-ladder step for any Italian super-bike fanatic: a full-on homologation special made just for racing. Mechanically identical to last year’s 180-horscpower 1098 R, the Troy Bayliss Edition commemorates the recently retired Aussie’s three World Superbike titles with a special Aldo Drudi paint scheme. The original 1098 knocked our socks off. It represented a major elevation in performance over the previous 999, not to mention looking loads better with its elegant styling. This year’s model, the 1198-yes, 1198-is an even better performer, a bump in displacement, among other engine and gearbox modifications, bringing output to 170 horsepower at 9750 rpm. Torque is up, too, to 97 foot-pounds at 8000 rpm. A bike for all road conditions’? That’s the idea behind the long-travel-suspensioned Multistrada 1100 S. Its engine displacement grew two years ago from 992 to 1078cc, resulting in an even wider powerband with more low-end torque. The bike also has extended service intervals that require a smaller number of parts and fewer operations, which in turn greatly reduce overall running costs. The Multistrada 1100 S comes stock with a smattering of carbon-fiber goodies along with superbike-derived Ohlins suspension components.

No holds barred. That’s the message Ducati is hoping to convey with the new 1098-based Streetfighter. There’s more to this model than simply ditching the 1098’s cat-eye fairing and replacing its stubby clip-ons with a wide Superbike-style handlebar. A revised frame with more-conservative steering geometry and a longer wheelbase provide added stability, even under full-power acceleration. Think of it as a mega-hooligan. Also available: The Streetfighter S. the same basic machine but with special paint, carbon-fiber bits, Ohlins suspension and forged aluminum wheels, plus Ducati Traction Control and Ducati Data Analysis.

One of Ducati’s most popular models, this middleweight superbike borrows heavily from its big brother, the 1198, which is not a bad place to start in search of performance! Power is up 30 percent over the previous-generation 749, meaning there is a claimed 134 horses lurking in the engine bay. Couple this with the fact that the 848 is also 44 pounds lighter than its predecessor, and the recipe for speed is looking very tasty. Much of the rest of the package, from the sleek bodywork to the racing-inspired digital dash to the single-sided swingarm, is just like that of the 1198.

Ducati Monster 696$8995

The frame is a hybrid steel-trellis and cast aluminum unit, while power conies from an 80-horsepower, 696cc air-cooled Twin. Ergonomics are redone with a shorter reach to the handlebar, lower, more-for- ward-mounted footpegs and the claimed lowest seat height of any Ducati, meant to broaden the appeal. An affordable, good-looking, fun-to-ride Italian motorcycle? What’s not to like?
