This is the “big” version of the now-discontinued Lightning featuring expanded ergonomics that make it better-suited for taller riders. Thanks to an extended swingarm, the wheelbase has been stretched 2 inches, and the seat is taller and wider than those of the cg model. Plus, the tailsection has been extended to allow more room for a passenger. Front-end geometry is mellower, with rake increased slightly from 21.0 to 21.6 degrees and trail goes from 3.3 inches to a rock-solid 4.7 inches. The XB12R packs more original thinking into its sporty package than just about any other two-wheeler on the market. It’s powered by a fuel-injected Sportster-derived Thunderstorm V-Twin engine designed to deliver oomph anywhere in the rev range. The aluminum frame holds the bike’s fuel supply in its spars, while the swingarm is the oil reservoir for the engine’s dry-sump lubrication system. Rim-mounted ZTL (zero torque load) front brake, under-engine exhaust and belt drive all make the Firebolt stand out. A fully adjustable Showa fork and shock, along with a short wheelbase and radical steering geometry, help the Buell carve corners with case.

The 1125R will likely go down in history as the most significant model in Buell’s 25-year history, because it’s the bike that broke tradition. It is the first Buell not powered by an engine sourced from The Motor Company. Instead, its propulsion comes from a 72-degree V-Twin designed specifically for this bike by Rotax, and it is claimed to produce 146 horsepower at the crank. The 1125R retains all the chassis innovations for which Buell is renowned, including the aluminum twin-spar frame that doubles as the fuel tank and the ZTL perimeter-rotor front brake.
