Strap on your knee sliders! The Thruxton is a faithful replica of the home-built roadracers that stormed across the English countryside from one pub to the next during the Sixties. Low clip-on handlebars, adjustable front and rear suspension, cut-down fenders, wire-spoked aluminum rims and a floating front disc brake separate this EFI-equipped parallel-Twin from the other similarly powered models that Triumph produces. Best of all. The Thruxton runs and rides as well as it looks, producing a claimed 69 horsepower.

TM produces some of the worlds most exotic off-road motorcycles, bikes hand-built one at a time rather than assembled on a production line. The EN 450 is a four-stroke, electric-start enduro that rides on a 50mm Marzocchi inverted fork and Ohlins shock (a 48mm Ohlins fork is optional). Power is via a thoroughly modern 449cc four-valve dohc Single equipped with a spark arrestor for legal off-road riding. Also available: The EN 530 4T and EN 250 4T, both of which are identical to the 450 except for engine size and tuning.

Triumph Bonneville / Bonneville SE$7699/8399
Engine type: done parallel-Twin
Displacement: 865cc
Carburetion: EFI
Transmission speeds: 5
Final drive: chain
Front brake: disc
Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 57.2 in.
Seat height: 29.5 in.
Fuel capacity: 4.2 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 440 lb.

The Bonneville got a bit of a makeover this year, with a rolling forward of its retro timeframe to the 1970s instead of the swinging ’60s. New are the upswept mufflers, shorter fenders, 1-inch lower seat and cast-alloy wheels. Like the other Bonnie-based bikes, the good-running air/oil-cooled parallel-Twin gets electronic fuel-injection, though the throttle bodies are designed to look like traditional carburetors! Also available: The Bonneville SE, with two-lone paint, a tachometer, polished engine covers and tank badges, all of which move the bike slightly upmarket.

Triumph Bonneville T100 / Bonneville 50th Anniversary / Bonneville Black$8799/9999/7299

Wheelbase: 59.1 in.
Seat height: 30.5 in.
Fuel capacity: 4.2 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 451 lb.

Bikes don’t gel any more fundamental than the Bonneville T100. This back-to-basics modern classic is exactly what it appears to be: an engine and two wheels, allied with a simple frame and swingarm, topped with a traditional-looking gas tank, a mild-rise handlebar and a broad, flat scat. Like all the other Twins in Triumph’s lineup, engine capacity is 865cc. Also available: The 50th anniversary model with orange/blue paint to commemorate the first Bonnies sold in 1959; and the Bonneville Black, which, as its name suggests, gets the black-out treatment on the gas tank, the lenders and the engine cases.

TM isn’t exactly a household name in the American motocross culture, but this Italian company makes some very good MX bikes nonetheless. The 450 4T is a light and fast Motocross- and Supercross-class four-stroke outfitted with high-quality equipment that includes a Marzocchi fork, an Ohlins shock (an Ohlins fork is optional) and Brembo brakes complementing TMs own home-built 449cc powerplant. Also available: The 250 4T and 530 4T. As is common throughout the TM line, all three of these four-stroke MX models differ from one another only in displacement and a few scant pounds of weight.

Triumph Daytona 675$9799
Engine type: dohc Inline-Triple
Displacement: G75cc
Carburetion: EFI
Transmission speeds: 6
Final drive: chain
Front brake: dual disc
Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 54.9 in.
Seat height: 32.5 in.
Fuel capacity: 4.6 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 356 lb.

As a testament to its overall goodness, the Daytona 675 went three years without revision and still was at the top of the middleweight sportbike class. Finally, for ‘09, Triumph has given the successful three-cylinder machine a makeover. Extensive work on the exhaust side of the engine (plus new, stronger connecting rods) helps boost claimed power and allow a higher redline. The upper fairing is restyled for a sharper look, while overall dry weight has been reduced with lighter wheels and muffler. Suspension was revised to include high- and low-speed compression damping, providing a better compromise between track prowess and road comfort.

Despite the growing popularity of four-stroke dirtbikes, two-stroke enduros arc still in demand by many riders, and TM’s EN 300 is a fantastic one. It combines practically unstoppable torque and sheer power with top-grade suspension and superb handling for an unforgettable off-road experience. As is the case with all TM models, the EN 300 is hand-assembled. Also available: The EN 250, EN 144 and EN 125, which are identical lo the EN 300 except for their respective displacements. Plus, the 144 and 125 both have six-speed gearboxes instead of the five-speeders in the 300 and 250.

Motocross riders have fully embraced the four-stroke revolution but that hasn’t left two-stroke MX bikes on the wayside. Atop TM’s two-stroke motocross line is the MX 300, which offers a user-friendly powerband with enough oomph to pull you through deep sand and sticky mud, and it can even easily launch you over the tallest, longest jumps. An aluminum frame fitted with an Ohlins shock and a 50mm Marzocchi fork will handle the roughest terrain, whether man-made or natural. Also available: The MX 250, MX 144 and MX 125, all practically identical to the 300 except for the size of their engines.

Inspired by the liter-class Speed Triple, the Daytona 675-based Street Triple is one of the best naked bikes on the market. Its light weight and agile chassis make this one of the most fun and approachable machines you can buy. The price is pretty nice, too, although the base models inverted fork and single rear shock arc non-adjustable. Engine tune is weighted a bit toward lower-end power, but it retains the 13,500-rpm redline of the previous Daytona engine. Also available: The Street Triple R. with fully adjustable front and rear suspension, plus radial-mount front brake calipers.

There’s a very limited demand for a 125cc two-stroke, non-street-legal supermoto bike in this country, but TM is giving its SMR 125 a shot here anyway. The SMR is a slightly modified version of the company’s EN 125 enduro but with engine-tuning specs more like that of the motocross model. It also wears 17-inch wheels, sticky sport tires, and Brembo brakes with big (a 320mm front, 240mm rear) rotors. Also available: The SMR 450 and SMR 530, which are very similar to the 125 but powered by bigger engines based on those of TM’s motocross and enduro four-strokes.

TM hasn’t forgotten about up-and-coming motocross riders and so produces the MX 85, a two-stroke bike for the stars of the future. This is no foo-foo playbike but instead is a for-real racer with a 43mm Paioli inverted fork, a fully adjustable WP piggyback-reservoir shock and a potent liquid-cooled 85cc engine. The frame is a chrome-moly-steel cradle type, the swingarm is an aluminum extrusion, the bodywork mimics that of TM’s bigger racebikes and the bike rolls on a 17-inch-front/14-inch-rcar tire combination. Also available: The MX 100, the very same 85cc hike hut with 19-/16-inch front/rear wheels.

There’s nothing quite like the roar of a big V-Twin under hard acceleration, and the Boulevard M109R plays that tune to perfection. This cruiser packs as much Suzuki GSX-R sportbike performance heritage as could be wedged between its massive 240mm rear radial and inverted fork. Also available: The Boulevard M109R Limited has a unique paint scheme with a racing stripe, plus a dash with a carbon-fiberlook face, a clear taillight lens with red LEDs and a textured seat. The Boulevard M109 R2 differs only by virtue of its sleek headlight design.

If the swooping form of the M109 family of muscle cruisers flexes your fancy but you value the handling traits of a narrower rear tire, the M90 is your ticket. Its 200-series rear radial ensures that no concessions have been made for fashions sake, and the liquid-cooled, long-stroke V-Twin delivers more than enough low-end torque to hold its rightful place on the boulevard. The M90 also features Suzuki’s advanced digital fuel-injection and engine-management systems that are designed to increase throttle response while also getting the most out of every drop of fuel.
