2009 March MOTORCYCLES

Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 56.5 In.
Seat height: 31.3 In.
Fuel capacity: 4.5 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 390/375 lb.

Is this another case of mistaken identity? Well, that’s one way to look at it. As with its 650s, United Motors’ liquid-cooled, eight-valve 250cc V-Twins are absolutely identical to those of the bikes’ Korean manufacturer, Hyosung. Key features include a full fairing with projector-beam headlights, single-shock rear suspension and adjustable footpegs. Updates for this year include a multi-function LCD display featuring speedometer, odometer, tripmeter, neutral light, fuel level, high beam and turnsignal indicators, along with blacked-out frame, wheels and suspension components. Also available: The V2S-250, a naked version of the 250R that carries a $500-lower suggested retail price.

United Motors V2C-250T$3999
Engine type: dohc V-Twin
Displacement 249cc
Carburetion: (2) 22mm Mikuni
Transmission speeds: 5
Final drive: chain
Front brake: disc
Rear brake: drum
Wheelbase: 59.0 In.
Seat height: 27.S in.
Fuel capacity: 3.7 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 370 lb.

This rebadged Hyosung GV250 is a nifty and affordable little entry-level V-Twin cruiser. With its low seat, comparatively light weight, low-end-torque-oriented gearing, stability-enhancing 17-inch wheels (dig that 150mm-wide rear tire!) and budget buy-in, it’s an ideal choice for new or less-experienced riders. Among its features are a digital LCD instrument panel that includes speedometer, odometer, tripmeter, neutral light, fuel level, high beam and turnsignal indicators. Color selections are black, burgundy, orange or silver.

United Motors X-Peed 250i$4499
Engine type: dohc Single
Displacement: 249cc
Carburetion: EFI
Transmission: automatic
Final drive: belt
Front brake: dual disc
Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 57.0 in.
Seat height: 29.9 in.
Fuel capacity: 2.9 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 363 lb.

Think of the 2009 X-Peed 250i as the grown-up version of the now-discontinued X-Peed 50R. Known to Hyosung buyers as the MS3-250, the 250i slots nicely into the fast-growing middleweight scooter category, which is to say that it’s powerful enough to stay ahead of four-wheel traffic but frugal when it comes to fuel usage. Features include seating for two and room for a full-face helmet and a jacket in the locking storage compartment under the seat. New for 2009 is a redesigned seat with adjustable rider backrest designed to provide more legroom for taller riders.

United Motors Matrix II 170 / Matrix II 150$2499/2099
Engine type: sohc Single
Displacement: 168/149cc
Carburetion: 24mm KT
Transmission: automatic
Final drive: belt
Front brake: disc
Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 54.0 In.
Seat height: 35.0 in.
Fuel capacity: 2.4 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 235/229 lb.

Pump up the volume? That’s the idea behind the Matrix II 170, a larger-displacement take on the Matrix II 150. Keyed underseat storage holds a full-face helmet, and the sporty rear rack is perfect for hauling a light load of gear or groceries. Front and rear disc brakes with wave rotors provide strong, predictable stopping power, an important feature when you’re negotiating the urban jungle. Also available: Commuting is fun on the Matrix II150, a slightly less-powerful and lower-priced version of the Matrix II 170.

United Motors GP1R-150$1799
Engine type: sohc Single
Displacement: 149cc
Carburetion: 24mm KT
Transmission: automatic
Final drive: belt
Front brake: disc
Rear brake: drum
Wheelbase: 48.9 In.
Seat height 29.9 In.
Fuel capacity: 2.4 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 220 lb.

If the Matrix is too big and too pricey for your scootering needs or for your wallet have no fear. New for 2009, the GP1R-150 has a smaller frame and wheels to make it friendlier to smaller riders, but it keeps the sporty styling and useful features-like projector-beam headlamps, locking underseat storage and electric start from the larger model. The price tag is incredibly low for a 150cc scooter; so combine that with a claimed fuel economy of 95 mpg and this is as cheap as dependable personal transportation gets.

Triumph Rocket III Touring$16,999 to $17,299
Engine type: done inline-Triple
Displacement: 2294cc
Carburetion: EFI
Transmission speeds: 5
Final drive: shaft
Front brake: dual disc
Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 67.2 In.
Seat height: 28.7 In.
Fuel capacity: 5.9 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 788 lb.

The Rocket III Touring aims its classic good looks and strong dose of long-range comfort and convenience at the moto-traveler. Its features include a version of the torque-laden 2.3-liter three-cylinder engine from the standard Rocket III that has been retuned for even greater low-end power, plus frame, suspension, wheels, seat, fuel tank, instruments and lights that are specific to this model. Lockable hard luggage and a touring windscreen come as standard equipment, while spending another S300 lands you a sweet, two-tone paint scheme.

Triumph Rocket III / Rocket III Classic$15,399 to $16,199
Engine type: dohc inline-Triple
Displacement: 2294cc
Carburetion: EFI
Transmission speeds: 5
Final drive: shaft
Front brake: dual disc
Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 66.7 in.
Seat height: 29.1 in.
Fuel capacity: 6.3 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 704 lb.

Gearheads are fond of saying there’s no replacement for displacement. Once you’ve opened the throttle on a Rocket III, you’ll no doubt agree with that line of thinking. Acceleration is effortless, the 140-cubic-inch engine producing eyeball-flattening, arm-straightening torque at any rpm and in any gear. Also available: The Rocket III Classic, the standard Rocket III fitted with a pullback handlebar, a stitched touring seal, different mufflers and forward-mounted floorboards for a more relaxed, cruising-oriented riding position.

Triumph Thunderbird$12,993/13,799

Displacement: 1599cc
Carburetion: EFI
Transmission speeds: 6
Final drive: belt
Front brake: dual disc

Seat height: 27.6 in.
Fuel capacity: 5.5 gal.
Claimed dry weight: na

Big Twin lovers looking for something different in a cruiser may find what they want with Triumph’s all-new Thunderbird. The 1600cc parallel-Twin is a clean-sheet design billed as a 2010 model, with the engine putting out some 80 horsepower and more than 100 foot-pounds of torque. It is counterbalanced for smoothness and fuel-injected for trouble-free operation. And to ensure that you can also stop this big musclebike, it’s fitted with triple disc brakes. Pitched as a power cruiser, the T-bird should live up to its billing. Also available: The Thunderbird ABS, the same machine equipped with anti-lock brakes.

Triumph Sprint ST / Sprint ST ABS$11,593/12,399
Engine type: dohc inline-Triple
Displacement: 1050cc
Carburetion: EFI
Transmission speeds: 6
Final drive: chain
Front brake: dual disc
Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 57.4 in.
Seat height: 31.7 in.
Fuel capacity: 5.2 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 462/469 lb.

This is a sport-tourer with a distinctly Triumph twist in the form of a rorty inline-Triple. The engine is the heart of this bike’s character, giving it enough personality to separate it from other class stalwarts, but also offering the smoothness and refinement to keep you satisfied on the long road. The Sprint is an approachable, fun bike for daily commuting, too, with excellent saddlebags, long fuel range and good wind protection. It also benefits from being somewhat smaller and lighter than the class big boys like the Kawasaki Concours 14. Also available: The Sprint ST ABS, the same bike filled with anti-lock brakes.

TM SMM 530 / SMM 450 / SMM 125$13.195/12.895/10,195
Engine type: four-/two-stroke Single
BxS: 98/95/54170/63.4/54.5mm

Transmission speeds: 5/5/6
Front wheel travel: na
Rear wheel travel: na
Fuel capacity: 2.3 gal.
Seat height: na
Front brake: disc
Rear brake: disc
Claimed dry weight: na

The most prestigious model in TM’s line of hand-built bikes is the SMM 530. Though it is equipped with full lighting and sticky 17-inch sport tires, it’s not street-legal here in the U.S. Still, the single-sided swingarm, star-pattern cast wheels and high-intensity headlights give the SMM 530 a distinct look. And with 528cc of arm-straightening power managed by top-shelf Ohlins suspension, the SMM lacks nothing on the performance side of things. Also available: The SMM 450, the same bike with less displacement; the SMM 125, also much the same except for its 125cc two-stroke engine.

Triumph Tiger 1050 / 1050 ABS / 1050 SE$11,599/12,399
Engine type: done Inline-Triple
Displacement: 1050cc
Carburetion: EFI
Transmission speeds: 6
Final drive: chain
Front brake: dual disc
Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 59.4 in.
Seat height: 32.8 in.
Fuel capacity: 5.2 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 436/443 lb.

Let’s get one thing crystal-clear: Aside from its long-haul-comfortable upright riding position, the only thing the Tiger has in common with the previous model of the same name is just that its name. Dual-purpose aspirations’? Gone. Spindly, gaiter-covered fork legs? History. Semi-knobbed tires? No more. This Britbike is now FSA-full street ahead as indicated by its stout inverted fork, radial-mount front brakes and gummy 17-inch tires. Also available: The Tiger 1050 ABS, which is filled with anti-lock brakes: and the SE, with ABS, special paint, color-matched handguards and saddlebags standard.

TM SMX 450 / SMX 660$10,795/11,395
Engine type: four-stroke Single
BxS: 95/104 x 63.4/77.4mm
Displacement: 449/658cc
Transmission speeds: 5
Front wheel travel: na
Rear wheel travel: na
Fuel capacity: 2.2 gal.
Seat height: na
Front brake: disc
Rear brake: disc
Claimed wet weight: 246/248 lb.

TM is a big believer in the sport of supermoto, a fact that is evidenced by its heavy involvement in the World Supermoto Championship and the several bikes it builds specifically for that type of racing. The SMX 450 is more than just a 450-class MX bike converted to supermoto with the usual 17-inch wheels, powerful front brake and sport tires; it incorporates numerous other modifications that make it more suitable for that form of competition. Also available: The SMX 660, a larger-displacement version of the same machine intended for the Unlimited supermoto class.

Triumph Speed Triple$11,299
Engine type: dohc inline-Triple
Displacement: 1050cc
Carburetion: EFI
Transmission speeds: 6
Final drive: chain
Front brake: dual disc
Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 56.2 in.
Seat height: 32.1 in.
Fuel capacity: 4.6 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 416 lb.

Known throughout the world of motorcycling as the original production-line streetfighter, the CW Ten Best-winning Speed Triple is a bike well-suited to “your-license-may-be-in-peril” antics like wheelies and stoppies. This unfaired bad boy is equipped with all manner of performance-first parts: a fully adjustable inverted fork, radial-mount brakes, stubby dual mufflers and a single-sided swingarm painted matte-black to match the tubular frame. Claimed power is a stout 131 horses, which is delivered in a linear manner. It may scream “bad attitude,” but nobody but you has to know it is also a good all-around streetbike.

Triumph Speedmaster$8699 to $8899
Engine type: done parallel-Twin
Displacement: 865cc
Carburetion: EFI
Transmission speeds: 5
Final drive: chain
Front brake: dual disc
Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 65.2 in.
Seat height: 28.3 In.
Fuel capacity: 5.1 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 504 lb.

The Speedmaster is a drag-style take on the more classically styled America cruiser, distinguishing itself with blacked-out engine and transmission cases. slash-cut mufflers, dual front disc brakes mounted on entirely different cast wheels, a contoured dual seat and a narrower handlebar. EFI is new this year, as on all the Bonnie-based bikes, but otherwise, the Speedmaster runs the same air/oil-cooled twin-cylinder engine, double-downtube chassis, and front and rear suspension as the America. Available in solid black or two-tone for a little more money, the Speedmaster offers a stripped-down essential cruising experience.

Triumph America$8699 to $8899
Engine type: done parallel-Twin
Displacement: 865cc
Carburetion: EFI
Transmission speeds: 5
Final drive: chain
Front brake: disc
Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 65.2 in.
Seat height: 28.3 In.
Fuel capacity: 5.1 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 497 lb.

You want custom? You got it. The America cruiser became a bigger and better motorcycle when the air/oil-cooled, jet-black (with chromed covers) parallel-Twin grew in displacement from 790 to 865cc a few years ago, but the big news this year is the adoption of fuel-injection. The bike exhales through reverse-cone mufflers that enhance its appearance. Other features include adjustable clutch and brake levers, nifty 12- spoke cast wheels and a comfortable passenger seat. The price can vary by as much as $200 depending upon color choice.

Triumph Scrambler$8499
Engine type: dohc parallel-Twin
Displacement: 865cc
Carburetion: EFI
Transmission speeds: 5
Final drive: chain
Front brake: disc
Rear brake: disc
Wheelbase: 59.1 in.
Seat height: 32.5 in.
Fuel capacity: 4.2 gal.
Claimed dry weight: 451 lb.

If this bike doesn’t conjure up images of exploring roads long forgotten by the rest of society or of sneaking out on a starry night just to feel the wind in your face, then maybe you should crawl back into bed, close your eyes and dream of the hereafter. Okay, we’re kidding. Well, not really. The Scrambler was created to enthuse and inspire. It’s based on the Bonneville, as its engine (now with EFI), chassis and basic shape suggest, but the rubber fork gaiters, dual high-mount exhaust pipes and semi-knobbed tires hark back to Triumph’s storied desert-racing heritage. Baja? Bring it on!
