Here’s the lightest, most powerful Boxer-engined sportbike BMW has ever produced. It is based on the discontinued R1200S, but that’s where the similarities end. Racing-developed dohc cylinder heads, forged pistons and redesigned connecting rods boost output to 128 horsepower and 85 foot-pounds of torque. Claimed dry weight compares to that of the Japanese liter-class Fours, thanks in part to carbon-fiber bodywork and forged aluminum wheels. Ohlins suspension and radial-mount Brembo Monobloc calipers are also standard.

The trellis front and rear swingarms are supported by a beautifully machined billet-aluminum omega frame. Powered by Ducati’s 1078cc DS engine, the 3D has loads of torque and plenty of power to launch its ultra-lightweight chassis down the road. The Tesi is loaded with top-shelf components including Extreme Tech front and rear shocks, forged aluminum Marvic wheels and four-piston radial-mount front calipers.

Chrome-moly steel tubing double-cradles the RS 450’s KTM-built liquid-cooled, four-valve, four-stroke engine. Despite all of its street-legalizing equipment, however, the 450 is a very capable off-road machine, thanks in part to its 45mm Marzocchi fork, fully adjustable Sachs shock and the rest of its enduro-proven chassis. Also available: The RS 525, the same machine as the 450 but with 62cc more displacement.

Large-displacement supermotard-style streetbikes are all the rage these days, and BMW’s entry in this exciting category is the HP2 Megamoto. It combines the broad-handlebar, unfaired appearance and long-travel suspension of the off-road-ready (but now discontinued) HP2 Enduro with racetrack-spec four-piston front brakes, wide 17-inch wheels and sticky low-profile radial tires. Despite its long wheelbase and tall seat, the Megamoto is an absolute hoot to ride, with big power, sharp handling and superb on-road traction. Like the HP2 sport, the Megamoto is expensive and exotic but worth every cent.

The ultra-light chassis involves a slim aluminum frame with a backbone that doubles as a fuel tank. From behind, at least, the Tornado is easily identified by the signature exhaust fans in the tailsection that draw air through the rear-mounted radiators. The frame utilizes large tubular-steel spars bolted and bonded onto aluminum plates. The fork is a Marzocchi and the shock an Extreme Tech unit working on an aluminum swingarm. Front braking is handled by powerful radial-mount Brembos.

Side-mount radiators give the TnT a distinctive look. A 50mm Marzocchi fork and fully adjustable Extreme Tech shock arc mated to a hybrid steel-trellis-and-aluminum-plate frame and trellis swingarm with eccentric chain adjusters. This middleweight Triple is more of a three-quarter-scale bike than, say, Triumph’s 675cc Street Triple, filling a gap in Benelli s range. It’s powered by the same basic engine layout as the big-bore 1130s but destroked to 49.2mm from its sibling’s 62.0. Different pistons give the 899 an incresed compression ratio of 12.5:1, while redline has been raised a bit higher than on the big bikes. The chassis is very similar to the TnT Sport EVO’s and has an identical wheelbase but with a lower seat height. Its another interesting addition to the streetfighter category. With a big influx of cash from parent company Qianjiang, Benelli has stepped out of the box and started building models that aren’t powered by its range of three-cylinder engines. The bike that stands out the most is the BX 505 Enduro, a model introduced in Europe last year. Its engine is a short-stroke, dohc, fuel-injected, liquid-cooled Single with four titanium valves. The frame is an aluminum alloy perimeter unit with a progressively linked Sachs shock and a 50mm inverted fork. But throw in the right accessories and the R can be many things. The optional electronic suspension adjustment, ABS and active stability control systems make the R a techno lour de force. Optional heated handgrips, centerstand, windscreen and saddlebags turn it into a competent sport-tourer. No matter how you equip it, the R is ready and willing to do whatever you need it to do.
