Riders seeking the hot-rod-bobber look right out of the crate will love this bike. Stripped down, chopped and devoid of flashy finishes, the Bones is a throwback to the style of bikes that soared in popularity when GIs returned home from WWII. A blacked-out Springer front end, sprung solo saddle on a classic scat pan, round gloss-black air filter, cut-down fenders, mini apehanger bars and half-moon floorboards are just a few of the styling cues that reflect a time long past. The 96B Twin Cam engine is blacked-out with polished covers while straight-shot, slash-cut pipes and laced wheels with black rims keep the look appropriately sinister.

If the Dyna Low Rider looks “slammed” to you, that’s because it is. Hey, it has to live up to its name, right? Thanks to a shortened rear suspension and a deeply dished scat, the rider sits just under 27 inches off the ground. That lowness helps the Low Rider not only look cool but handle easily, as well. It also comes equipped with mid-mount foot controls and highway pegs. Faced with all that and a pullback handlebar, the rider is treated to comfortable ergonomics and a nice ride. A handlebar-mounted indicator cluster adds a nifty styling touch.

You want presence? You’ve got it! The Fat Bob is a twin-headlight, big-forked, triple-disc-braked, muscled-up eye-catcher of a boulevard beast. Dig the tommy-gun-esque heat shield on the rear header pipe and the custom-look, slash-cut, dual mufflers! As on all modern-day Dynas, power comes from the vibration-isolated Twin Cam 96 engine driving through a six-speed transmission and a long-wearing belt final drive. Wheels are 16-inch slotted cast-aluminum jobs mounted with a 180mm-widc rear tire and fat 130mm front.

This is the top-of-the-ladder step for any Italian super-bike fanatic: a full-on homologation special made just for racing. Mechanically identical to last year’s 180-horscpower 1098 R, the Troy Bayliss Edition commemorates the recently retired Aussie’s three World Superbike titles with a special Aldo Drudi paint scheme. Ohlins suspension is standard, while the bike rolls on forged aluminum Y-spoke wheels. Engine weight is reduced, as is the overall dry weight of the R. which is 13 pounds less than the new 1198. The Bayliss “kit” includes a Termignoni race exhaust and suitably programmed ECU, a rear stand and a color-matched bike cover.

Minimalist styling cues from the post-World War II “‘bobber” movement and the custom choppers of the 1970s were the inspiration for the Dyna Street Bob. It’s a bike that’s all about going solo, since it has neither a seat nor pegs for a passenger. The rider sits way down in a 26.8-inch-high seat and hangs onto a mini-apehanger handlebar. Regardless of the color of the Street Bob’s tank and fenders. a wrinkle-black finish is applied to the battery box, console and belt guard. The Twin Cam 96 engine exhales through chromed staggered shorty dual exhausts for just the right look.

The original 1098 knocked our socks off. It represented a major elevation in performance over the previous 999, not to mention looking loads better with its elegant styling. This year’s model, the 1198-yes, 1198-is an even better performer, a bump in displacement, among other engine and gearbox modifications, bringing output to 170 horsepower at 9750 rpm. Torque is up, too, to 97 foot-pounds at 8000 rpm. Also available: The 1198 S. filled with extra carbon-fiber bits and Ohlins suspension rather than the Showa pieces used on the standard model, plus Ducati Traction Control.

“Clean Machine” would be a good description of the Dyna Super Glide. Nothing radical going on here, just a nice combination of straightforward and traditional H-D lines set off with the right amount of chrome in all the right places. A pullback handlebar hovers above a Fat Bob fuel tank with FXDWG-style tank-mounted speedometer and ignition console. Like all production-line Big Twins, the Super Glide is powered by a Twin Cam 96 engine linked to a six-speed Cruise Drive transmission. A Smart Security System is just one of many available options.

Despite being the most affordable H-D Big Twin model, the Dyna Super Glide doesn’t shortchange its rider in the least. It packs the same 96-inch, fuel-injected power and six-speed gearbox as the rest of the Big Twins, and the chassis is pretty much the same as on the other Dynas. This bike’s low buy-in makes it the perfect first step on the road to creative personalization. Key features include a 160mm-wide rear tire, a solo seat, silver 10-spoke cast-aluminum wheels, low-rise handlebar and staggered shorty dual exhausts.

The XB12R packs more original thinking into its sporty package than just about any other two-wheeler on the market. It’s powered by a fuel-injected Sportster-derived Thunderstorm V-Twin engine designed to deliver oomph anywhere in the rev range. The aluminum frame holds the bike’s fuel supply in its spars, while the swingarm is the oil reservoir for the engine’s dry-sump lubrication system. Rim-mounted ZTL (zero torque load) front brake, under-engine exhaust and belt drive all make the Firebolt stand out. A fully adjustable Showa fork and shock, along with a short wheelbase and radical steering geometry, help the Buell carve corners with case.

In addition to being fast and fun, it’s a pleasant all-around road companion, with spacious ergonomics, a comfy scat and a taut but controlled ride. Available in H-D orange, black or Pewter Denim.

So, you would love to have a full-size Sportster but you need something a little bit lower so you can get both feet comfortably on the ground at stops? If that’s the case, the aptly named 1200 Low is custom-tailored just for you. With its cut-down, 26-inch-high scat and shortened rear suspension, the Low should provide even the most inseam-challenged riders firm footing. The pullback handlebar is an inch closer to the rider than on the other Sporty models, as well. Mate all that with a reduced-effort clutch, and you get a Sportster that is comfortable and controllable for a wide range of riders, regardless of their height or leg length.

Somewhere between its debut in 1957 and the present, the Sportster lost its edge. At one time the most hairy-chested of two-wheelers, it’s since been reduced in many people’s minds to a beginner’s bike. Well, the rough-and-ready Nightster is doing its part to destroy that image. Among the key styling features: a side-mounted license plate that folds rearward, flush with the blacked-out fender rails: wheel rims, hubs, fork, handlebar and hand/foot controls finished in basic black: medium-gray powdercoated engine cases with polished valve covers; and a cut-down solo seat that props the rider just a tad more than 26 inches off the ground.
