Among the seven-model family of Harley-Davidson touring models, the Road Glide got the same chassis upgrades as the other FLs, but it remains the only one to wear a frame-mounted fairing which, along with the gas tank and hard saddlebags, has been given updated graphics. But aside from adding to the bike’s clean, sleek styling, the fairing offers excellent protection from the elements wheth¬er on a cross-country trek or a cross-town trip. Keeping the ride a-rockin’ and a-rollin’ is a 40-watt Harman/Kardon audio system. Cruise control is standard but ABS is an option.

Just as four-stroke Singles have become the engine type of choice for all manner of off-road bikes, so too has 450cc become the predominant displace¬ment. Gas Gas’s bread-and-butter 450-class enduro bike is the EC 450 FSR, features a powerful engine fed by a batteryless fuel-injection system. It also comes equipped with a top-quality Marzocchi fork and Sachs shock, which help make the FSR a very serious off-road competition machine. Also available: The EC 515 FSR, which is the very same enduro bike as the 450 but is powered by a 515cc engine.

Evoking memories of Harley-Davidsons past, the Road King Classic is loaded with nostalgic styling cues such as wide whitewall tires rolling on spoked wheels, a tooled leather touring scat and leather-covered hard-shell saddlebags accented with metal trim. The bike may look clas¬sically styled, but its 96-inch air-cooled engine is the latest V-Twin from The Motor Company, as is the updated frame, swingarm and wheel/tire package. With its large, detachable windshield, air-adjustable rear suspen¬sion, auxiliary passing lights, triple-disc brakes and cruise control, this Classic is ready to hit the road.

The Spanish Gas Gas company is really enthusiastic about supermoto racing, and the presence of two 450-class “supermotard” (what the sport is called in Europe) models in the lineup is clear evidence of that fact. Though the two are very similar in concept and design to the SM 450, the Halley 450 is a street-legal iteration that has slightly shorter suspension travel, a battery-powered fuel-injection system (the SM’s is battery-less), a few less-expensive suspension and brake components and, understandably, a lower price tag. And unlike the SM, which comes in 450 and 515 versions, the Halley is available only as a 450.

Here’s classic Harley-Davidson styling mated with the open-road comfort of an updated true touring chassis. The Road King has been an H-D favorite for years, and chassis improvements for 2009 should continue that trend. The King’s relevant features include weather-resistant, locking hard-shell saddlebags and an easily detachable windshield for long-distance rides in any weather. A two-up touring seat, air-adjustable rear suspension and footboards enhance comfort for rider and passenger on all-day sojourns. Nine color options include four two-tone combinations.

In building its first four-stroke trials bike. Gas Gas put a new twist on an old idea. The 350cc engine in that machine, simply called the 4-Strokc, is a side-valve (flathead) design that yields a motor about the same size, height-wise, as a comparable two-stroke. The cam and its followers are down in the engine case, pushing up directly on the ends of the valves, keeping weight very low. The liquid-cooled engine uses batteryless fuel-injection. And because the chassis is very much like that of the TXT trials models, the 4-Stroke weighs a mere 8 pounds more than the Pro 300 two-stroke.

Due to the greater weight, increased mechanical complication and higher repair costs of four-stroke off-road bikes, you may not have bought into the whole Thumper enduro thing. If that’s the case. Gas Gas has a line of super-competitive two-strokes that should be right up your alley. The EC 300 offers all the physical benefits of a lightweight 250-class enduro but with power more akin to what you get with an Open-class bike. Also available: The EC 250. EC 200 and EC 125, all of which are prac¬tically the same machines as the EC 300 bill have less displacement, are a few pounds lighter and, obviously, are less expensive.

If you love traveling on two wheels but long for the look of touring bikes past, stop the search; the Heritage Softail Classic has your name written all over it. The Classic’s, uh, “classic” dresser styling includes chromed passing lamps, a big copbike windshield, studded leather saddlebags with matching scat and larger passenger seat and backrest, and deeply valanced fenders laid over fat, 16-inch wire-spoked wheels. Yup, this is pretty much how touring bikes looked half a century ago, but this one has 96 inches of modern V-Twin power and electronic fuel-injection.

As in most other forms of motorcycle competition, four-strokes are becoming dominant in observed trials, but two-strokes aren’t dead yet. Want conclusive proof.’ Spaniard Adam Raga took second in the 2008 Outdoor World Trials Championships on a two-stroke Gas Gas, and he finished second in the World indoor championship in 2007. as well. The TXT Pro 300 is the top of the Spanish company’s broad line of two-stroke observed-trials machines, a 297cc world-class bike that weighs a mere 150 pounds. Also available: Four other TXT Pro models in 272cc (the 280), 249cc (the 250). I75cc (the 200) and I25cc versions of essentially the same motorcycle.

Setting its sights on the future with a look that’s a blast from the past describes the Softail Deluxe. Its super-low, 25.9-inch-high seat is one of the lowest on the market, giving the Deluxe extra appeal to a broad range of riders. The wide handlebar mounted on pullback risers combines with full-length floorboards to provide a comfortable, easy-going riding position. Though the Deluxe is heavy on nostalgia, its 96-inch fuel-injected engine and six-speed transmission arc thoroughly up to date.

If you want to go solo on a Softail, the Rocker can take you there with its minimalist “Rockertail” rear end which locates the fender directly on the swingarm, just an inch over the ultra-fat 240mm tire. Harley says “anti-sparkle” is the theme for the Satin Stainless Metallic finish created specifically for the Rocker and applied to the headlight, triple-clamps, fork lowers, gas-tank console, swingarm and other pieces; the frame is color-matched to the bodywork. Also available: The Rocker C, which adds hidden passenger sealing, deluxe paint, polished wheels and loads of custom chrome finish work.

Gas Gas’s approach to building a motocross bike is via enduro, as its MC 250 two-stroke MXer is derived directly from the company’s EC 250. The formula is simple: Take away the EC’s lights and fit a more-stiffly sprung 50mm upside-down fork, a 19-inch rear wheel and an aluminum swingarm that allows 12 inches of rear wheel travel. Engine tuning and expansion-chamber specs also vary to give the MX more racetrack-ready power characteristics. Unfortunately, Gas Gas had no photos of the 2009 MC 250 available by the time we went to press, so the accompanying picture is of the 2008 model.

Children need moto-toys, too, which is why Gas Gas makes trials bikes for kids of all ages, even small ones. The Cadet 80 is a scaled-down, six-speed trialer that is so perfectly proportioned that, without placing something close it to use for scale, it looks just like the full-size models. Aside from its 72cc engine, the biggest difference is in wheel diameters, as the Cadet wears a 19-inch front instead of the usual 21, and a 17-inch rear rather than an 18. Those changes alone help make the Cadet easier for small/young people to maneuver. Also available: The Boy 50. a tiny, two-speed model made lo order for little dudes and dudettes, and it uses a 16/14-inch wheel combination.

One of the true classics in the Softail lineup continues to impress. A powerful, black powdercoated, fuel-injected Twin Cam 96B motor with chromed covers feeds an over/under shotgun exhaust system. Tires at both ends are 17-inch radials instead of 16-inch bias-ply, the rear a 200mm-wide jobbie under a short rear fender. The wheels themselves are semi-solid discs with interesting “bullet hole” styling. A 1/4-inch handlebar (necked down to the usual 1 inch at the ends) sits on bare-knuckle risers and features internal wiring for a super-clean look. No wonder the Fat Boy has been one of The Motor Company’s top-selling models over the past two decades.

Kick back and stretch out on the Softail Custom, a model that harks back to the “Easy Rider” era of the Sixties and Seventies, a time when apehanger bars, extended front ends and stepped seats became fashionable. It’s a bike that strongly hints of “chopper,” but without the harsh ride and weird handling. The FXSTC is powered by the Twin Cam 96B engine driving through the six-speed Cruise Drive transmission, of course, and it rides on a 200mm-wide tire out back and a skinny, 21-incher up front. Passengers will especially appreciate the scat’s deep padding and integral backrest.

A bad-dude attitude-that’s what the Night Train is all about. Riding on a fat, 200mm rear tire and packing the fuel-injected Twin Cam 96B engine/six-speed-tranny combo, this bike is fully capable of backing up its street-tough image. The dark side never looked better with an all-black powertrain that uses wrinkle-black trim on the engine covers, air cleaner, oil tank, rear fender supports and even the tank-mounted instrument console. A black, slotted cast-alumi¬num disc rear wheel with a color-matched pulley under a bobtail fender contrasts with a 21-inch wire-spoked wheel up front, further projects that no-bull attitude.
